A male hippopotamus in Kolkata Alipore Zoo has no interest in leaving the water. For the past 14 days, it stayed on water area; the unusual behaviour started from Christmas. Zoo authorities and veterinarians are monitoring the hippo’s health, and they are trying to understand the reason for changes in routine.
According to Alipore Zoo, the hippopotamus has been staying continuously in the water and not following its normal daily routine. Hippopotamuses spend most of their daytime hours in water to regulate body temperature and protect their sensitive skin. In the evening time they usually move to dry land and rest inside their night shelters. However, the young hippo has stopped coming out of the water.
Zoo caretakers made several attempts to get the animal to leave the water. Food was offered at different times during the day. But the hippo occasionally accepts the food, it quickly returns to the water after grabbing it. Officials have also observed that the animal is eating less than usual.
Veterinarians at the Kolkata Zoo are currently unable to confirm whether the behaviour is linked to a medical condition or other. One possible explanation being considered is the impact of the cold weather. Hippos are belongs to warmer regions and may experience stress or discomfort during sudden temperature drops. The ongoing cold wave in the city could be affecting the animal’s physical comfort, leading it to remain in the water for longer periods.
Another important factor under investigation is emotional stress. The male hippopotamus arrived at Alipore Zoo in September 2024 from Odisha’s Nandankanan Zoological Park, accompanied by a female companion. Unfortunately, the female hippopotamus died just a few days after arriving at the zoo. Experts believe the loss of its mate, combined with relocation stress and unfamiliar surroundings, may be affecting the animal’s behaviour.
Animal experts note that hippos are social creatures and can form bonds with their partners. Sudden separation or loss may lead to changes in eating habits, movement, and overall behaviour. Zoo authorities are examining whether grief and loneliness could be contributing to the hippo’s refusal to leave the water.
A zoo official stated that there are no visible signs of injury, and the animal’s condition is being monitored continuously. Veterinarians assess their appetite, activity levels, and overall response to care. Additional medical tests may be conducted if the behaviour continues.
To minimise stress and ensure the animal’s comfort, the zoo has secured the enclosure from public access. This step helps reduce noise, crowd disturbance, and unnecessary attention. Officials believe a calm environment is essential while the hippo recovers and adjusts.
The Alipore Zoo management has assured that the health and welfare of the animals remain their top priority. Experts made with proper care, monitoring, and time, the young hippopotamus will gradually return to its normal routine. The incident has also drawn attention to the emotional and environmental needs of animals living in enclosure, highlighting the importance of sensitive and responsible wildlife care.
